Silver to steal Gold at Cheltenham!

Silver hoping to strike Gold

We’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed, to keep us warm if nothing else! but more in hope that tomorrow’s card at Cheltenham survives the overnight frost because Stolen Silver is set to take his chance for Potter Group in the December Gold Cup at 1:50 which is live on ITV Racing and Racing TV.

Trained by Sam Thomas, the dashing grey was running a nice race in the Paddy Power Gold Cup over course and distance last time before unshipping poor old Sam Twiston-Davies three from home which was obviously very disappointing for all concerned. The fact he continued to jump loose for the rest of the way home – and finish first past the post – did little to soften the blow!

He was quite sore after his Prestbury Park exertions but has been given plenty of time to recover by his excellent trainer who reports his charge to be in good shape:

“We’re all looking forward to Stolen Silver running at Cheltenham tomorrow and while he was very sore after his last run, touch wood, he’s been back into a good routine for the last few weeks and we’re coming into the race rather optimistic”

Sam Thomas hoping for Cheltenham success with Silver

A winner of the Silver Trophy last April capped what was a tremendous season for the son of Lord Du Sud who worked his way up to a rating of 150 which will, of course, make things slightly more difficult for the remainder of the campaign.

He had a fantastic season last season but as a consequence I do feel this year will be a lot tougher for him. It would’ve been lovely to see where we might’ve finished last time had he not unseated but he’s in good form and has a solid each way chance again – it’s just a question of whether he can carry all that weight.

Looking to the future, Thomas continued:

I’m certain he still has some good days left in him; whether that’s off his current mark or we have to wait a few runs to get back down to a winnable rating, we’ll have to wait and see. But he is certainly showing me that he stays very well now and it might just be that we look at stepping him up again in trip if we need to in the future.”
